Using circular needles, cast-on 57 sts. and work 2 beg. r. increasing the number of sts.
1st r. (RS): knit.; at the end of r. cast-on 3 sts. [60 sts.]
2nd r. (WS): purl all sts. included 3 new sts; at the end of r. cast-on 3 sts. [63 sts.]
NOTES
At beg. and end of every r. work 2 sts. in garter st. (= 2 selvages on both sides of shawl). The yo are the increases of the shawl.
Stocking stitch piece
1st r. (WS): 2 sts. in garter st., yo, k1, yo, place 1st M after yo, k1, place 2nd M after knit st., yo, k1 until last 4 sts., yo, place 3rd M after the yo, k1, place 3rd M after knit st., yo, k1, yo, 2 sts. in garter st. [6 sts. increased = 69 sts. in all]
2nd r. (WS): 2 sts. in garter st., yo, purl all sts. (yo included) until 2 sts. before the end, move the M in same position as prev. r., yo, 2 sts. in garter st. [2 sts. increased, 71 sts. in all]
3rd r. (RS): 2 sts. in garter st., yo, knit all sts. (yo included) until 1st M, yo, move 1st M after the yo, k1, move 2th M after the knit st., yo, knit all sts. until 3rd M, yo before the M, move 3rd M after the yo, k1, move 4th M after knit st., knit all sts. (yo included) until 2 sts. before the end, yo, 2 sts. in garter st. [6 sts. increased, 77 sts. in all]
4th r. (WS): 2 sts. in garter st., yo, purl all sts. (yo included) until 2 sts. before the end, move the M in same position as prev., yo, 2 sts. in garter st. [2 sts. increases, 79 sts. in all]
Always rep. 3rd and 4th r. until the end of 38th r. (= 219 sts. in all). Remove all the M and, from next r., work only side increases.
Open-work piece
1st r. (RS): 2 sts. in garter st., yo, knit all sts. until last 2 sts., yo before last 2 sts. and then work 2 sts. in garter st.
2nd r. (WS): rep. 1st r.
3rd r. (RS): rep. 1st r.
4th r. (WS): 2 sts. in garter st., yo, purl all sts. until last 2 sts., yo before last 2 sts. and then work 2 sts. in garter st. [227 sts.]
5th r. (RS): 2 sts. in garter st., yo, k1, (yo, k2tog) until last 2 sts., yo before last 2 sts. and then work 2 sts. in garter st.
NB: at the end of 5th r. and before last yo, do no work single k1, because there's odd number of sts.

From 15th to 84th r.: rep. from 1st to 14th r. 5 times more. [= 6 modules of candlelight st.].
85th r. (RS): 2 sts. in garter st., yo, (k4, yo) rep. until last 2 sts., 2 sts. in garter st.
86th r. (WS): 2 sts. in garter st., purl until last 2 m., 2 sts. in garter st.
Complete the shawl rep. from 1st to 7th r. of open-work pieces.
Last r. (WS): knit.
Bind off all sts in knit.
